Hon. Ranj Pillai was first elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the general election for the 34th Legislative Assembly on November 7, 2016.

Mr. Pillai was appointed to the Executive Council of Yukon (cabinet) on December 3, 2016. He is currently Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, Minister of Economic Development, and Minister responsible for the Yukon Development Corporation and the Yukon Energy Corporation.

Mr. Pillai previously sat as a Whitehorse City Councillor from 2009 to 2012. While on council he helped bring Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada to Whitehorse and was awarded the 2011 Yukon Tourism Champion Award for his efforts. He spearheaded the first anti-racism and discrimination bylaw North of 60.

Mr. Pillai is a trusted decision-maker and tireless community advocate who has contributed to the success of Yukon businesses, governments, schools and not-for-profits. He has coached sports at Porter Creek Secondary over the last 15 years, negotiated resource deals with First Nations, and helped build many small businesses in Yukon.

Mr. Pillai was previously the executive director of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations Government, has held senior roles with Northern Vision Development and Yukon College, and is a former member of the Governor General’s Leadership Conference. He has also held previous roles with numerous First Nation Development Corporations and junior mining companies.
