Station Manager, Inuvik Satelite Station Facility, Natural Resources Canada
Topic:
TECHNOLOGY, COMMUNICATIONS AND COMING POSSIBILITIES: DISRUPTIVE APPROACHES THAT WILL CHANGE WHAT’S POSSIBLE IN THE NORTH

I’ve been working as the Inuvik Satellite Station Facility (ISSF) Station Manager with Natural Resources Canada for a little over a year now. The position is unique in that it has grown to combine facility administration, operations, development and community engagement under one role. (This role falls under the Ground Station Data Infrastructure Division of Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI), Canadian Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO) within NRCan’s Strategic Policy and Results.) Prior to this, I had worked for the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation for close to 7 years in community economic development across the Inuvialuit Settlement region, where I worked with Inuvialuit in developing and managing businesses, managing renewable resource, green energy, communications infrastructure and tourism projects while advocating on the behalf of beneficiaries and lobbying for funding. The new role within NRCan sees me engage with a whole new suite of national and foreign institutions that our community can benefit from connecting with and allows me to continue to work with the very same community stakeholders, private sector interests and government agencies, albeit on a wider scale to include both comprehensive land claim groups (Gwich’in and Inuvialuit). The knowledge economy is growing in Inuvik. As a resident with a family, I am thrilled to see and work on developments with the community first-hand.
